Courses | Prosthetics | Complections International Academy of Make-up Artistry Prosthetics

The word “prosthesis” is a medical term for a manufactured piece used to replace a missing part of a body. In the realm of make-up and special effects, “prosthetics” refer to any item that is adhered to a performer’s body to embellish, disguise, or emphasize a character or condition. This course is essential for make-up artists entering the field of film and television.

Students study the theory, principles and preparation of prosthetic appliances, including product and safety procedures. Product knowledge of different materials including cements, plasters, stones, silicon and flexible materials is integral to this initial discussion.

Character design (translating two-dimensional into three-dimensional concepts) begins the practical work in the course, followed by life-casting techniques (facial and additional body parts, dental impressions), mould-making, sculpture, detailing and texturing. Students learn proper appliance adhering and blending techniques (make-up vs. paint, airbrushing), designing and creating non-permanent dental appliances, and proper appliance removal and skin care.
